Origin :
Lychee is a tropical and subtropical fruit tree native to the Guangdong and Fujian provinces of China, and now cultivated in many parts of the world. The fresh fruit has a "delicate, whitish pulp" with a floral smell and a fragrant, sweet flavor.
Records of lychee consumption in China go back to 2000 BC and it was certainly a delicacy of the Chinese Imperial Court, where fresh lychee was couriered in on fast horses. Today they are widely available fresh and tinned, and are cultivated in many tropical climates around the world.
Fresh lychees add an Asian flavour to fish dishes and an Oriental twist to desserts such as coconut rice pudding with lychees.
